A warning from a volunteer returning defeated from Spain about what was coming for those who had thought Fascism was just something that was happening somewhere else. There were the dark thunderclouds of the Second World War on the horizon of course and within months Europe was plunged into a war far more deadly and all-consuming than the 1914-18 war.....but there is a warning here too of creeping Fascism, the sort we let into our societies because we don't notice until it's too late.
