My Comrade And My Friend

from NO PASARAN! by Joe Solo

/

about

The final track brings us a little closer to the present day. It is 1986 and Harry Jones returns to the hillside just outside Brunete where he buried his friend Bill Palmer half a century before. Harry is older, and although not a believer, he pleads for mercy on Bill's behalf as he finally gets to say a proper goodbye.

I read a number of accounts from veterans of Spain when researching this album, and the overriding feeling was entirely different from accounts of the First World War. Most men returned from the trenches believing the war had been an almighty calamity, a waste of life, a crime against humanity itself; yet from Spain, almost to a man, they all declare they would drop everything and do it all again tomorrow. I wanted to get that feeling too.

lyrics

Dear Lord if you can hear me now
If you've got an ear a lend
Spare a little mercy for
My comrade and my friend

He never had no faith in you
But right up til the end
Was ever honest, brave and true
My comrade and my friend

He gave his life for freedom
And he'd do it all again
Spare a little mercy for
My comrade and my friend.
