Cemetery Walls

from NO PASARAN! by Joe Solo

/

about

When the Fascists took Malaga it is estimated that they massacred 3600 men, women and children, some on the beaches and some lined up against the cemetery walls at San Raphael. Franco had promised to kill half the population of Spain if that was what it took, and anyone accused of collaborating with their democratically elected government was put to death. Many had fled, taking the only route to safety, the road to Almeria. They were strafed by Fascist bombers en route and many died by the roadside. Their bones were still being discovered by lorry drivers taking the mountain road 30 years later, and the graveyard at San Raphael is being excavated in a bid to identify those who simply disappeared and were never heard of again.

Atrocities took place on both sides.

lyrics

The Church bell still rings on the hour
The sun will still rise and will fall
On the road to Almeria
And the holes in the cemetery wall

The bones in the dust by the roadside
And San Raphael they recall
The road to Almeria
And the holes in the cemetery wall

Rise up, rise up from the mountains
All you men, women, children and all
From the road to Almeria
To the holes in the cemetery wall
