Ain't-a-Got-a-Nothin'
02:52
|
|||
I asked my Daddy why they called me a poor boy
He said: "Now son, that's just the way you were born
And you ain't never gonna be good for nothin' boy
Good for nothin' exept for picking their corn
And you ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'"
But if I ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Then I ain't-a-got-a-nothin' to lose
He said: "Now don't you talk to me about dreaming,
See your dreams is just like diamonds and pearls
Pretty little lies
That a rich kid buys
Before Daddy lets 'em loose on the world
And you ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'"
But if I ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Then I ain't-a-got-a-nothin' to lose
And I would rather die a trier
Than just sit around singing the blues
"Remember son, you'll always be nothing!"
Was the shout as I walked out of the door.
But I don't really care
It's a big world out there
And I'm sure there's got to be something more.
And if I ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
If I ain't-a-got-a-nothin'
Then I ain't-a-got-a-nothin' to lose
And I would rather die a trier
Than just sit around singing the blues

Little Red Songbook
02:15

Little Red Songbook shine a light
Upon this lonely stage tonight
Come summon up your ghosts for me
I sure could use the company
Give me Woody Guthrie and Josh White
Standing right here by my side
Tonight
I'm not alone
I'm not alone
Little Red Songbook tell me why
They'd frame a man and watch him die
But they framed a man they could not kill
The day they came for old Joe Hill
Now there's Woody Guthrie and Josh White
Standing right here by my side
Tonight
I'm not alone
I'm not alone

I'm back down at the barricades
I've got the old red banners and the flags unfurled
Strike out down the road to freedom
Get the word out around the world
I'm gonna shout it out from the highest mountain
I've just remembered what my voice is for
I ain't gonna take the fall for no-one
Ain't gonna be a pawn no more
I'm a simple man with a simple problem
I'm been taken for a low down fool
They got me with their mathematics
But then I never went to public school
Take 3 from 2 you make someone lose out
And don't you come knocking on my door
I ain't gonna take the fall for no-one
Ain't gonna be a pawn no more
Damn right "This Land is My Land"
I've seen it raped by the men of means
They still got money in their Saville Row suits
Ain't got a penny in my old blue jeans
When I get in debt I've got to pay my way out
They get in debt I've got to pay some more
I ain't gonna take the fall for no-one
Ain't gonna be a pawn no more
I'm gonna shout it out from the highest mountain
And just remember what your voice is for
I ain't gonna take the fall for no-one
Ain't gonna be a pawn no more

Gemini

As long as I've got the stars
Then I'll never be alone
Give me Ursa Minor
And I'll find my way back home
I'll just keep Gemini to my right
As I roll down the road tonight
There's just me and my car
And this beat up guitar
And I know it's gonna be alright
I ain't ending up here
That much I know is true
I'm like that starlight
I'm just passing through
I'll just keep Gemini to my right
As I roll down the road tonight
There's just me and my car
And this beat up guitar
And I know it's gonna be alright

Broken Man
04:39
|
|||
I will not walk like a broken man
For the world to see it won
I'll just straighten up my shoulders and
Bear the weight of what I've done
And I will not falter, will not fail
I'll just give it all I can
It's a long, long road through the rain and hail
But I will not walk like a broken man
I've seen this world break better men
Til all their hopes are crushed
And their expectations lie in rags
With their dreams ground down to dust
But I've come this far on will alone
And it made me who I am
I feel every mile in my aching bones
But I will not walk like a broken man
Let me hear you singing: 'Hey now, hey now'
I'm gonna shout it out loud
Cos their ain't a nothing wrong with being poor and proud
And let me hear you singing: 'Hey now, hey now'
I'm giving all that I can
And I will not walk like a broken man

You wouldn't think to look at me
But I fought the champ in 53
Locarno Ballroom away in town
It's gone now though, they pulled it down
I was big and strong back then you see
You wouldn't think to look at me
See this silver scar above my eye?
Well I got it in the 5th
Son, I tried to stay up on my feet
But they stopped it in the 6th
I'd caught him on the jaw
And I'd hurt him I could see
If I'd had one round more
It could have turned out differently
I almost was someone
I almost was someone
But you wouldn't think
To look at me

Ghost Of An '83 Ford

GHOST OF AN 83 FORD
Don't know why I bought her
And I don't suppose you'd understand
I just figured that the way things were
I'd have a lot of spare time on my hands
And she reminded me of something that me Dad once said
And I believe is true
"There ain't nothing in this world, son
An honest working man can't do"
I was laid-off on a Friday
And about all I could afford
Was the red and rusty relic
Of the ghost of an 83 Ford
Thought I'd get most of what I needed scrap
And give her a little TLC
And I'd heard Lenny down at Lacey's
Would maybe sign-off on an MOT
But when I showed her Phil and Jonesy
They just laughed and said: "You're on your own"
But I swear I'll take her out on Main Street
With the sun gleaming off of her chrome
I was laid-off on a Friday
And about all I could afford
Was the red and rusty relic
Of the ghost of an 83 Ford
I fixed her radiator Friday at first light
I was bashing out the bonnet on a Saturday night
I tried to turn her over, put my foot to the floor
And outside in the dark I heard an engine roar
When I rolled her up to Jonesy
Well I swear that he could barely speak
And Lenny loves her so much
That I'm starting work for him next week
I guess that what I'm trying to tell you
Is that someday's, well, the road is rough
But don't let anybody tell you
That what you've got it ain't enough
I was laid-off on a Friday
And about all I could afford
Was the red and rusty relic
Of the ghost of an 83 Ford

The Pull

THE PULL
Heave boys heave
I've blisters on my hands
You wouldn't believe
But it's heave boys heave
I vowed I'd do all that I can
And I won't give up a life
No not one single man
No I won't give them up to the sea
Heave boys heave
Was the 18th day of 1881
The worst storm seen in years
The North Sea blizzard black
And howling down
Til all else disappears
Heave boys heave
I've blisters on my hands
You wouldn't believe
But it's heave boys heave
I vowed I'd do all that I can
And I won't give up a life
No not one single man
No I won't give them up to the sea
Heave boys heave
With the wind North-Westerly, well we knew
We'd never make the Bay
"There's men there need us boys"
The skipper said
"And there's another way"
Heave boys heave
I've blisters on my hands
You wouldn't believe
But it's heave boys heave
I vowed I'd do all that I can
And I won't give up a life
No not one single man
No I won't give them up to the sea
Heave boys heave
Those in front they dug, spade in hand
The rest we hauled on rope
And we dragged that lifeboat overland
With the strength men get from hope
Heave boys heave
I've blisters on my hands
You wouldn't believe
But it's heave boys heave
I vowed I'd do all that I can
And I won't give up a life
No not one single man
No I won't give them up to the sea
Heave boys heave
We put to sea and we fought that storm
And brought home all them men
I'm dead-beat now boys, but if I was called
I'd do it all again
Heave boys heave
I've blisters on my hands
You wouldn't believe
But it's heave boys heave
I vowed I'd do all that I can
And I won't give up a life
No not one single man
No I won't give them up to the sea
Heave boys heave
